ASCII Table
Every ASCII character with its decimal, hex, octal, binary and HTML code.
About ASCII Table
An ASCII table of all 128 characters with decimal, hex, octal and binary codes, HTML entities and escape sequences, plus the Latin-1 extended set 128–255.
How to use
- Type in the filter box: a character (
A), a decimal code (65), a hex code (41), or a name such as "tab" or "space". The table narrows as you type. - Switch between All, Control and Printable to hide the rows you do not need.
- Tick "Extended (128–255)" to append the Latin-1 supplement.
- Each row has a Copy button for the character itself (or the code, for control characters).
What is covered
| Column | Contents |
|---|---|
| Dec, Hex, Oct, Bin | The code in base 10, 16 (two digits), 8 (three digits) and 2 (eight bits) |
| Char | The printable character, or the abbreviation of a control character (NUL, SOH, ESC, SP, DEL) |
| Name | The full name: "Start of Heading", "Latin capital letter A", "Low line (underscore)" |
| HTML | The named entity where one exists (&, <, >, ", '), otherwise the numeric &#NN; form |
| Escape | The C and JavaScript escape where one exists: \0, \t, \n, \r, \\, \', \", \x1B |
- Codes 0–31 and 127 are control characters; 32–126 are printable. Space (32) is counted as printable here.
- The extended rows follow ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1), which is also the first 256 code points of Unicode. Codes 128–159 are C1 control characters there. Windows-1252, the encoding most Windows text used, puts printable characters in that range instead: 128 is €, 147 and 148 are the curly quotes. If a file shows strange characters for those codes, it was written in Windows-1252 and read as Latin-1 or UTF-8.
- In UTF-8 the ASCII range is encoded unchanged as single bytes, so this table is also the first 128 entries of UTF-8.

The table is part of the page. Filtering runs in the browser; no request is made and nothing is stored.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the ASCII code for space?
- Space is ASCII 32 in decimal, 0x20 in hex, 040 in octal and 00100000 in binary. In HTML it can be written as , and a non-breaking space is (160).
- What is the ASCII value of A and a?
- Capital A is 65 (0x41) and lowercase a is 97 (0x61). Upper and lower case letters differ by exactly 32, which is a single bit (0x20), so case can be flipped by toggling that bit.
- What is the difference between ASCII and extended ASCII?
- ASCII defines 128 characters, codes 0 to 127, in seven bits. "Extended ASCII" is any eight-bit encoding that keeps those 128 and adds 128 more; ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) and Windows-1252 are the most common, and they disagree about codes 128 to 159.
- What are ASCII control characters?
- Codes 0 to 31 and 127. They were designed to control teleprinters: tab (9), line feed (10), carriage return (13), escape (27) and bell (7) are still used; most of the rest, such as Start of Heading or Record Separator, are rare outside legacy data formats.
